Hello Joel, I am a total newbie to this. Don't know if you will get to read this but here goes.. I just purchased a 2001 Catera and a couple of times the oil lamp came on and went off in a short while.. oil was just changed.. also after driving a short while, white smoke appears in the engine area.. Can you suggest what may be causing this?

Its possible that the smoke and the oil lamp are related...I know the cam covers liked to leak on these engines. There is also the possibilty that the smoke is being generated by coolant and not related to the oil lamp. Can open the hood and see a general area that the smoke is coming from?

A horse is a horse of course of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course.
That is of course unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed!

Go right to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed!

People yakkity-yak a streak
And waste your time of day,
but Mister Ed will never speak
Unless he has something to say!

hello slick! glad you're here :2:
we read all posts here, and will be glad to help.
first of all...I'd like to say, make sure your engine oil is full, we don't want any damage to your engine. did you see the smoke before the oil change or only after? I want to make sure this problem isn't related to the oil change.

As Apache said these were known for cam cover gaskets leaking. They can also saturate the saprk plug wire boots, so you may want to have that checked also.

As a piece of advice. Cateras were not the greatest car Cadillac ever built. They have a whole list of problems that are common. That is why Cadillac stopped making them. You may want to divest yourself of that car if you can.
"I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God. Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things;...." Ammon (Alma 26:11-12)

Thanks all for your responses.. Joel, the people where I purchased this car changed the oil. I took it to a garage for an inspection and the mechanic said the oil was full and looked new. The oil lamp came on and off the day picked up the car (purchased in FLA and transported to PA) but the white smoke started several days later. I will check and see if I can determine exactly where the smoke is comming from.. I can see the smoke comming under the hood on both sides of engine.. as you may suspect, I know NOTHING about auto mechanics

at this point, it may be a good idea to take the car to a dealer or a shop you trust and get a complete diagnosis of the situation. :head_hurts_kr:

did you purchase it from an individual person or a car dealer? Could you get your money back if you can provide proof that there is something wrong with the vehicle?

Hello and welcome. :victory:

It sure sounds like you have a scrambled module. you will need to have the codes read to know where to start.
you also may want to check the battery and connections.......voltage problems can result in lots of quirky behavior.
